[FAQ] I forgot my main password

ℹ️ This article is only applicable if you forgot main database password! To restore extra database password see "I forgot my extra database password".

Try remembering your password

For security reasons, your main password is not stored anywhere. There is no way to restore it, or to access your data without the password.
Try all your common passwords and different variations of them.

Login with biometrics and change password

If you can login with biometrics on any of your devices:
  1. Go to Settings > Databases > Main database.
  2. Set a new password via Change password.
  3. Sync the data with the new password to a cloud.
On other devices, where you cannot login in Safe app:
  1. Enter any password 3 times.
  2. Choose to delete the local database.
  3. Restore your data from the cloud.
  4. Enter Safe with the new password.

Use old password

ℹ️ Not applicable if your main database is stored in iCloud or Google Drive app folder
If you’ve changed your main password recently and still remember the old password, then you may try to roll back your database to the state, when it had that old password. For this, you should use the file-versioning system of your cloud. The location of the cloud database file depends on your cloud - see "Cloud database location".
  1. Open a web browser and locate your cloud database file (SafeInCloud.db).
  2. Right-click the file to open its context menu and select Version history (or Manage versions).
  3. Download a file version that had the old password, which you still remember.
  4. Start Safe app (better a desktop version).
  5. Enter any password 3 times.
  6. Choose to delete the local database.
  7. Create a new database and set any password.
  8. Select Options > Databases > Main database > Restore.
  9. Choose the downloaded file.
  10. After the restoration, try entering with the old password.
  11. If the password is wrong, try another file version from the history.

Nothing helps

If you still cannot remember your password, then the only way forward is erasing all the data and starting over:
  1. Delete the cloud database (see "Cloud database location")
  2. Enter any password 3 times.
  3. Choose to delete the local database.
  4. Create a new database and set a new password.
